New Directions in Computing: Transformation of Knowledge-Based to Competency-Based Curricula

For decades, the ACM and IEEE Computer Society have issued curricular guidelines for computing disciplines that include CAC-accredited programs such as computer science, cybersecurity, data science, information systems, and information technology. These guidelines were primarily knowledge-based, i.e., what graduates in these disciplines need to know and know how to do. Computing Curricula 2020 (CC2020), however, makes a major transformation from a purely knowledge-based view to a competency-based view of curricula that emphasize technical skills and human dispositions to complement knowledge. As CC2020 is likely to have a major impact on computing programs, this session will briefly review competency-based education and then actively engage attendees to solicit guidance on how CAC should change accreditation of computing programs in the future.
