Doug Bowman

Adjunct Accreditation Director of Engineering, ABET

Dr. Douglas Bowman entered the engineering profession as a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy in 1978 with a degree in general engineering. During his multifaceted career, he held a wide variety of engineering and leadership positions in the military, academia, engineering accreditation, and the aerospace industry.

He attended graduate school at Stanford University as a Hertz Fellow, receiving MSEE and Ph.D. degrees in 1983 and 1986, respectively. Bowman served as a signal corps officer while in the Army with assignments in Europe and the US, completing his active service on the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy. He then joined the former GE Aerospace, now Lockheed Martin, in 1988 as a communications system engineer. From that time until his retirement in 2014 he worked in successive positions providing business, program and engineering leadership for numerous information systems, logistics support and software development programs supporting both U.S. and foreign national and strategic goals. He retired as program director, logistics information technology systems.

A senior member of the IEEE and the AIAA, Bowman is a registered professional engineer and volunteered for ABET during most of his career, supporting the global accreditation of university engineering and technology programs. Previously he has served as a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers Industry Advisory Group, the AIAA Systems Engineering Technical Committee, and the Advisory Board of the Johns Hopkins University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Other professional activities included service on the Research Advisory Committee of the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland and on the Board of Directors of the Microelectronics and Computer Technologies Corporation (MCC). He currently serves as an adjunct accreditation director for the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
